Your Anvil needs a Stand
Переглядів 9 тис.4 місяці тому
An anvil should be at proper working height. Most of the time that requires good solid stand. The heavier the stand the better, but for this little anvil I'm going to keep the stand simple and somewhat portable. Forging a Holdfast for the Anvil - Basic Blacksmithing

A holdfast is an easy way to hold material at the anvil. I find the ideal size difference for the holdfast material is about 1/16" under the size of the hardy hole in the anvil Links for products, suppliers and supporting the channel may be found on the main channel page. #blacksmithing #forged #blacksmith Blacksmithing and related activities can be hazardous. Make the Size You NEED

Swaging round stock down by a 1/16th of an inch may seem silly, but the size is critical for the holdfasts I make. The SayMak power hammer with shop made dies makes the job relatively efficient. Blacksmith forging Wood Workers HOLDFAST
Bit late to the party, but I just bought one of these anvils and it rings like a bell. I'd need hearing protection if I was going to work on it as is.
will you adopt me and teach me the old ways thank you for your videos
They're phenomenal machines! I can melt a pound of steel in a No. 1 clay graphite crucible... that's kinda the upper limit as far as I've seen though. It has no issue melting 350g.
Thank you for your video.
hope this comment is one you see with your morning coffee. Thank you for your videos i am going to be getting into smithing here soon and your videos have been a great help.
I'm curious as to what steel he put in the cutting edge. Obviously, it's something with more carbon..
I generally use 5160
@BlackBearForgeII Thanks for replying! I'm a new hobbiest smith and new sub. I love your content, and so do the other guys in my group.
Very concise, informative, and engaging video. Thanks alot.
It’s crazy how easy it is to learn from you just from watching.
My dad does it sometimes
Very nice. But what do you do if you have excessive scale on the hook? Is a file enough to clean it up or should you do a vinegar bath maybe?
I'm sorry, but you kind of look like a Theodore Roosevelt from Night at the Museum
Absolutely! Lately, some idiot did "four hours of research" on the internet and claimed to have solved the mystery of the cause of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. As a retired Coast Guard Marine Inspector and Investigator, I replied that I MIGHT listen to him after he graduated from a Marine Academy, and sailed as a professional Mariner for at least 10 years, and had worked his way up to Master or Chief Engineer, and until that time, to shut up and go away. The same is true of people that watch a handful of videos and think they know all there is to know about Blacksmithing!
“Struck with another hammer”
This makes me want to buy a forge and an anvil
Watched your video, then built a very similar stand for that anvil's twin brother. Thank you for taking the time to build it while piddling around with the cameras and all that. I can't imagine how distracting that might be, to always be having it in mind to stay centered in the shot, to have to stop working and move a camera, and especially not inventing new words when the inanimate objects start getting contrary! 🤣 Your delivery and dry humor just make it all work together, at least for me. Thanks again!
Its a fullering tool
What was the verdict
Anything is a hammer if you try hard enough
Bravo mister.Είσαι από τους λίγους που έμειναν με τέτοιες γνώσεις.Lefteris from creece.
I’ve gotten so many good deals on old smith tools because ppl thought they were weird hammer heads not worth the time.
Hahahahaha I cannot believe the phone surfers and keyboard stands are trying to tell a blacksmith what to do with his hammer 😂 I know I’m a computer geek, and I am here to learn not order experts around
Chisel hammer
The 3rd one looks a lot like a chopping hammer to me. And the last one looks like a hammer to me. Why “don’t strike a hammer with another hammer”?
Id call it a wedge. Much like a splitting wedge isn't called an axe.
Yap, as a child I thought it was a weird looking hammer, until my grandpa hammered it into a block of wood :D
Why did he split the blade side and then re forge weld it again???
I was welding in a higher carbon steel for better edge holding in the finished piece.
Just wanted to pause and say that I love the work that you do sir. I have thoroughly enjoyed your videos, and am utilizing your Blacksmithing on a budget list, along with some of your other videos, to begin my journey. I am going to be retiring from the military within the next year, so I wanted to begin the next journey. I believe metal, in all of its possibility, is the way I will be proceeding. Thank you again.
Hey, to correct you on something you said, the chisel welded on is called a chip hammer, used to slide away splatter that remains on metal to remove it.
No, the welded on handle doesn't define the tool. This is a chisel I made to use under the treadle hammer. If i wanted a chipping hammer I would have made something better suited than a chisel.
@@BlackBearForgeII Fair point

Every high school shop teacher everywhere...meets all criteria
Nice hammer
Slag hammer....
How far from the spike head, do you start the handle hole?
It's a hammer
Sooooo……… what happened John!??? It’s been over a year now Lol 🤷♂️👍
How come all these handyman videos the guy sounds like Ron Swanson
The problem comes when the thing being hit is of sufficient hardness to send out splinters when hit. Chisels, when not made by a moron, are not going to have this problem under appropriate use.
Ah, forgive them. They don't understand.
A chisel with a curved edge! A good chisel would have a straight cutting edge
What is my purpose? You pass butter?
Man explain the definition of having a purpose to a generation mainly comprised of children and toddlers. Keep on the good fight sir. We all grow up eventually.
every time I see one of these anvils I cant help thinking about the spell in the Harry potter movies for bringing something from a distance (its not spelt that way either ) Is this from your hook series John?
You crack me up with them tool flying over shoulder. Love you videos and humor. 👍😁😄😂🤣
Looks more like a hatchet/ax to me, but that's still splitting hairs.
Such an artistic throwing. How many times have you repeated this move?
Dr Phil retired from being a therapist it seems
Hi, my name is Esteban, residing in California. I’m trying to build an anvil from scratch and I’m as new to this as they come. I wanted to see if you could give me specs on the heights and widths for this anvil with a horn in a German style anvil. Appreciate any help you can give.
Who was expecting this man to throw his tools backwards and hit the window?
Why can’t you hit a hammer with another hammer? Never heard that one
